Picked these up from a guy who had an ad on craigslist. They were in a "20th Century US coins" frame the seller's uncle supposedly had put together many years ago. After the uncle passed away, these went to the seller. They're definitely not the prettiest coins on the planet, but for $40, I'm pretty pleased with the deal. They all seem to check out as far as weight in regards to authenticity, no key dates or anything. Here's what was included for $40: 1901 IHC1957D Wheatie 1943 Steelie 1964 LMC1930 Buff 1962D Jefferson 1916 Barber dime1940 Merc 1964 Roosie 1958D Washington Qtr (only qtr in the frame, unfortunately) 1900 Barber Half 1941 Walking Liberty half1959D Franklin 1964 Kennedy 1921 Morgan 1922 Peace 1971D Ike i usually browse craigslist, but it's so full of silver and gold "buyers" it's more annoying than anything. the ad for these coins had been up a few days, glad I decided to give it a look-see.

$40 is a fair price for where silver is now. I've "cracked" open a few of those 20th framed sets. I know the uncle didn't collect them as they were all put in there at the same time. Most coins turn black like that after 30 years with nasty 70's chemicals in the materials...not to mention the glue the normally holds the coins in place.
The coins are normally polished so they are usually just worth face.

very good deal The silver dimes are worth at least $1.00 each Morgan and Peace dollar Sell $12 to $14 buy at $17 to $19 the Walking/Franklin/Kennedy half $5.00 to $7.00 each Hard to tell on the Barber half can not see how much detail it has My guess would be $20 to $30 on the half .. I have a feeling it is f-15 or better .. if not it could be less than the $20.

there were 3 coins missing from the frame, the holes were still plugged with the cardboard "hole-fillers", liberty head (barber) nickel, Barber quarter, and Standing Liberty quarter. will acetone or anything help to remove any of the black? I don't need them gleaming, just a little more silvery would be nice.

In my opinion, about anything you use, will cause these coins to have a cleaned look.
Dipping may take some or all of the tone off, but most can tell it has been dipped.
I like the tone look of that barber half. How well can you see Liberty, if at all?

What did the frame look like? I've seen the ones GraceOutcast is talking about & agree with him on those. Your coins don't have that look, & the unfilled spaces makes me believe it's a different style frame that the Uncle might have actually filled. The dollar coins appear to have mint luster.

on the barber, the liberty is still present and complete, I surprised by that. the reverses, on the halves and dollars are almost completely black, almost looks like they were colored in with sharpie. the reverses on the dimes, for most part is almost completely free of the black. Here's a pic of the barber, liberty still legible, and the unfortunate reverse.

and here's the evil cardboard culprit. you can see the hole filler for the nickel and Barber quarter still in place. I think there was a Standing Liberty quarter at some time, but it probably had fallen out. when he showed me the set, a few coins were loose and scattered under the glass. he said he knew he could probably get more, but didn't want the hassle of dealing with ebay and having to list each coin individually, since he didn't know enough about them. he was happy when he found out I was an actual collector and not just some guy who was gonna melt em all down or turn around and flip em on ebay for a quick profit.

I'll be wanting to see closer shots of the Morgan and Peace dollars, of course. The Morgan looks to have some very nice album toning. Perhaps what some would consider "artificial," but pleasing all the same.

I picked up some mint sets for a great price. Just had to convince the guy to ship them to me, it worked out fine.

I actually really like that Peace dollar. The morgan is cool too. Let me know if you plan on re-selling them.

That's an interesting "frame" picture....I can't say I've ever seen one like that. It does look different from the kind you buy complete with coins.
Ugly reverse or not I'd be interested in the Barber half if you decide to sell/trade. It's got the level of detail I'm looking for & I can overlook the toning if the price is right.
