Jefferson nickel steps, How many for full steps.

And is it more common for newer Jefferson nickels to have full steps than older ones.

Even though I have probably handled more Jeffersons than just about anybody, Wheezydog would be able to give you a better answer to this than me! I do know that practically every Jefferson from the last 20 years has full steps. This is because the reverse was redesigned to have the steps be more recessed into the design. I have heard five steps and six steps considered full steps. This might be due to various minor redesigning of the reverse over the years causing there to be a change in the number of steps. Wheezy could answer this better than me!

Thanks for the input, I have been reading. Seems like the design change was sometime in the late 80's
to have the steps more recessed. Have not found exactly what year that happened.

On some I have I see 5 steps .. I was hoping that is considered fell step

I think it's fair to say that "no one knows".

No one.

"It's coming out in the wash".

Questions about the quality of recent mint strikes always get the "well, it should be good, but...."

Part of the problem is to define what you mean when you say "newer" Jeffersons. I'm sure you would agree that Grand-Pappy Ben has a different idea than 16 yr old Sophomore Cheerleader Kim does...

I'm not trying to be a "dork" here (at least not on purpose).

For example, I consider the 1970's to be modern and there are Jeffersons that are very, very difficult to find with Full Steps from that time period.

So .....

There was a strengthening of the design both obverse and reverse, in 1971. 1971 and 1972 examples can be found pretty regularly with full steps, but they went downhill quick after that. I think that that design change just strengthened the design without recessing the steps. It was something like the late 80's before somebody got the idea that perhaps recessing the steps would preserve the design feature.

I could be wrong but I had 1990 as the year when it went to 6 FS from my notes when I was roll searching nickels.

I had a similar question a while back where I was more interested in finding out about the steps that are at each end of the building and if it mattered as to being FS (never got an answer). Below is a pic from wiki where you can see it clearly.

During my nickel roll searching I found a 1971-D with 5 full steps, they were complete steps from left to right with out a break from any bag marks. Comparing the steps from that coin to say a 2008 the design on the modern seem to be much more define in that area. I know that one is relativity new and the other is over thirty years old with wear on it, I believe if you compared a new 71 to a 08 you would find the steps were beefed up on the later. IMHO

Jeffs from the mid to late 60's often have no detail in the steps at all even when in high ms state. Die Deterioration was so rampant then that I've seen ms 1968's amd 69's lacking detail on virtuall all of montecello without any wear on the actual coin. I'm sure cnd and the other roll searchers have noticed the same thing.
