I've just begun a set of Shield nickels, and I'm still a bit unsure of my ability to grade them properly right now. I know some of the members collect this type of coin, and I'm hoping to get some help on grading this one. All opinions will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Way out of my comfort zone; I'm going to guess the experts will judge it high EF-low AU.

Why are you considering damage?

EF-45.
A nice rare one!! Only 68,800 minted. My 2010 RedBook lists this coin at around $600.

The patina looks off based on the pics, as if it was improperly stored. More like 'surface problems', not actual bangs or hits if that makes sense.

I agree with XF45. PCGS may go 40 as conservative as they are.

I would say it would make a solid VF35 because of the eye appeal but it just misses XF40.
That being there are no real distracting problems. There appears to be a layer of thin oxidation which is just a form of toning, it isn't the prettiest toning but it is a good sign of being in original uncleaned condition.

The grading guide doesn't have a description for VF here on Coin Facts or in my Red Book.
It goes from:
F12 Fine - Half of each olive leaf is smooth.
To:
EF40 Extremely Fine - Leaf tips show slight wear. Cross over shield slightly worn.
EACH Olive leaf is not worn halfway but some are. There is more than just slight wear on the leaf tips.

However, I think the value on an attractive example like this might still be fair at XF40 levels.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all who responded to this post. The general concensus seems to be extra fine, and I think I'll inventory it as such. Again, thank you. I'll be posting another Shield nickel (1875) after I have completed this post.....if any of you would like to take a stab at it.

Ralph
