Partly just an experiment to test my photography skills, but what do you grade this? I was hoping the coin is MS-65 or 66 (highlight for my guess), but I am relatively new to this series. Edited by coinguybrian 07/08/2010 9:36 pm

Thanks!
I'm going to try again with the pics tomorrow, though. Want to be pretty sure on the grade because of the potential value.

I'm an amateur when it comes to grading, but that is a beautiful coin and I'd say MS-64 or 65 RB. Better pics would help.

You probably need nohope to chime in on this one if you want an expert opinion. From these photos I'd go along with an MS grade but couldn't pin it down any better than that.

It looks like there's some rub on the shield and motto...nice AU?
Did you take the picture with the coin inside of a holder? If so, you need to take it out for clarity. If it's in a slab, then you still need to try to work on focussing better and perhaps using a much higher aperture (like 13-22...my macro lens goes up to 32 but needs lots of light). Also, it will help to do a little bit of post processing in something like GIMP or Elements to rotate the coin and do a bit of sharpening. If the coin's "brightness" is not correct, you can use a layer of Levels to take care of that.

It was in a flip at night. I'm going to take it out next time.

Took a better obverse pic. The reverse pic didnt turn out so great but the obverse pic is sharp. We bumped up the contrast and took it out of the flip. I found that even the most minor imperfections were greatly exaggerated this way, but it does show the detail extremely well.

Still not sharp enough to tell sorry. needs to be kind of like this Shoot the coin from directly overhead if you can. If your camera has multipoint focus use this. The coin is still out of focus..

practice with the light settings on your camera, they're still slightly yellowed, made a big improvement in my shots and I'm still working on it.

Its a far date and Obverse of 1870 Barber modified Hub. The scrolls on the side of the shield seem to have some rub but it could just be the picture. There seems to be damage to the WE.Check the W for doubling, Also the Trust. Its from a newer master hub so it should be a better strike than coins minted using the 69 Longacre hub.

Tough to tell a grade from those pics but it appears that just a hint of Red remains around the rim so I would designate it Brown according to current pics.
