I received this 2000 Massachusetts State Quarter in change. Is it possible that there's no cladding layer? What do you think?

At first glance I thought it was a silver proof because of how dark it is. When I saw it under magnification, I realized that the darkness is green and looks like verdigris.

The white on the top of the obverse is some kind of chalk-like substance or something like that. Most of it washed off under warm water. I left the rest because I didn't want to rub it. Also, the scratch on Washington's neck is very superficial and shows up as bright copper in hand. The obverse is a very mushy strike. I had a hard time photographing it. The reverse is very clear and crisp. It also has the toning that you tend to see on copper Lincolns.

I believe it's too dark. Here is my quarter missing a clad layer for comparison.

I'm starting to find these older now State Quarters
in that condition in bank rolls. Three cheers for the clad crap
coins. Time to start thinking about minting our dimes, quarters and halfs like the canadians. Then more fun with magnets.

To me it looks like it has environmental damage, possibly underground for a little while.

The MA quarter is affected by environmental damage, not missing a clad layer. A coin missing a clad layer will always be light so weight is a better test than appearance.

StJoeBlues: The best thing to do with this coin is to spend it. It will never be worth more than face.

Or you may try something else? Carry it with your change for long time. The other coins will remove the dark color off the higher devices and eventually it may have an antiqued look with the fields staying darker?
