Hehehe... you all should LOVE this one! Probably easy peasy for the experts here. This is an extra in my collection so I imagine I'll eventually sell or trade it at some point, so I need to get these figured out! From reading Red Book, this doesn't have a full and clear "LIBERTY", so I was thinking F15... and I was like... whoa, that seems low. So then I pulled up Photograde and it seems closer to VF35...? So what do you all think? Thank you!

Nice 1889, I would grade this coin at VF-30. There however are some scratches and marks on the cheek, it also looks like it was cleaned at some point which will effect the grade a bit.

I think the coin does have some VF detail but would probably net grade at Fine12 because of the marks on the obverse and if it has been cleaned.

Quote: ...this doesn't have a full and clear "LIBERTY"... Your pic shows "LIBERTY" full and clear to me. Don't just go by letters when grading, look at the overall wear. Your coin has VF+ meat on it but does have some issues. An F15 net grade sounds about right.

I love the wood grain look, even if it has been cleaned...

Thanks!
So noted on the Liberty - for me (and, obviously it's easier to see in-hand" the right arm of the y is almost fully worn off.
And yes, it was cleaned - this, to me is a strange story. Apparently it was stored for YEARS in motor oil. When the guy that sold it to me sent it on, he gave it a quick wash in soapy water to get the oil off. Is motor oil a normal storage device? When you think about it, it makes sense... so long as it's not some new fancy motor oil that creates a molecular bond with metal!

Cool coloring. Good story too. I can vaguely recall hearing something about motor oil and coins. but I doubt the coin should be left in oil for years. May be damaged due to the oil. F-15/VF-20 details I say. I'm thinking a possible 20 because the marks on the chin and the field at 11 o clock may not be bad enough to lower the grade.

VF netted to a F is what I would call it.

I like VF-30 for this. I guess oil would preserve it? Interesting! Nice details with some obvious circulation wear.
