While I've only been a member a short while, I've been searching thru Kennedy rolls for quite a while. Over time I've noticed many different marks on the halves, but they seem to be coming more frequent. I think the marking is destructive and wished people wouldn't deface them. This weekend I found the following different marks:
  • Black dot on "R" of Liberty
  • Black dot on "S" of Trust
  • Black dot on ear
  • Black stripe across reverse
  • Blue mark on rim
  • Gold dot in "O" of Dollar

I though it would be interesting to see what others have noticed and compare notes.

I get that same thing in my boxes. It's from roll searchers trying to see if they get their own coins back. I get maybe 10 a box.

Unfortunately I dumped the ones w/ marks back into the bag with all the others so all 2,000 halves are mixed together. Next time I get a batch I'll save the marked ones aside and try my picture skills.

i mark an X above my initials cg on the coin wrapper themselves
then I return them to the same banks where I never get coins, just deposit them.
I never draw on the coins themselves, I think that's just lame

I do the same thing slash. I just mark the wrappers, never the coins. I think that is just sad, especially coming from a numismatist. Just because you don't need the coin doesn't mean some youngster doesn't.

There are a ton out there with markings. The worst I see on a regular basis is spray paint.

I too have come across some. Acetone will usaully lift the marking (markers are removable). I came across a JFK 97 proof that someone marked witk a marker. Acetone took it right off.

okiepb, I see the black mark in the ear a lot. Which part of the country are you in? I'm in NJ and come across those fairly often.

I'm in Wisconsin and I see an awful lot of them here. If I didn't consider it as adding additional destruction to an already defaced coin, I'd add a mark to it & we could see where this coins wind up. Kind of map their travels.

If you think marking a coin with a marker is bad imagine a coin dealer defacing silver bullion (mostly dollars and halves) with a sharp object. I know someone who does that in order to destroy it's appeal as a numismatic coin and truly turn it into scrap metal. It makes me sick..... Sincerely, John Leckrone

I've found a lot of marked halves too. I've seen mostly a large blue squiggle across Kennedy's face and a small black mark on FG like grime5 mentioned. Anyone else see those markings (I'm in CO if you are nearby)? I would really appreciate it if people would stop doing that, or if they really want to mark up a coin, use a scratched up one (less collector value). Even if the markings are removable, I probably won't go that far unless it's a pretty nice coin.

Most in the MN area, the obverse side is colored in. Some of the coins I would've kept too, but not with the markings. :(
