Tonight, for the 4th time running, Heritage refused to accept my bid for a coin offered on an Internet-only auction. I've had my fill. I will no longer recommend them as a place to purchase coins.

Very strange, do you know or suspect the reason why? I'm a member but only for access to the Archive to look up prices realized, grades, etc.

I'd like some more info. Why did they refuse you?

To not give you prior notice sucks.

I freely admit, I attempted a snipe. Knowing my past experiences, I placed the bid with 20 seconds left rather than the 3-5 seconds I usually do at ebay. Mind you, I do this a *lot* - I can reliably count seconds in my own mind, and I'm quite sure there was time left on the countdown.

I entered an amount in dollars and cents. It immediately messaged me, wanting an even-dollar amount. I'm quick on the keyboard - I changed my bid and re-entered it with (according to my mental count) about 10 seconds left. I got a "Time has expired for Internet bids" message, on an Internet-only auction, the same as I have every time I've placed a bid with under a minute left.

As a result, some lucky soul out there got a 1921 NGC MS-65 Morgan, the Condition Census example of a prominent VAM, for $104. The consigner took one straight in the pants that time.

I'd be pretty mad also. I used to try sniping but I find I'm better off just bidding what I'm willing to pay.

I know that isn't much of a consolation.

Not to hijack the thread but Teletrade is the opposite. the Auction finishes at 22:00 but you have until 22:00:59 to continue placing bids it took me a long time to figure out why I was loosing lots after the auction had apparently closed.
I don't bid on Heritage though I would like too. I just don't feel its fair that I have to pay sales tax and an out of state bidder does not.

To be shut out with 10 seconds left is just plain wrong.

If you lived in California, you'd have to pay sales tax on Teletrade and Heritage purchases...they both have locations there.

Don't you purchase coins for resale? You can send a resale certificate to Heritage.

No I purchase for me most of the time. I am hardly a professional coin dealer. At least not one that makes any money....
