Here's a new arrival that has potential (in my book of few pages) to be up the MS scale a ways. If so, that would be a very good thing. Except for the weak breast strike, I think it's a really great coin - visually with the toning and wear-wise (or lack of). If the consensus is high enough, I'll send it in for grading. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

I hate to say this, but unless you bought it from someone who has absolutely no clue about Morgans, it's likely AU55-58.

If a weakly-struck MS coin, it will grade MS64. That's a $1000 coin for that year/mint. It's worth over $300 in MS63. Any dealer will know this is a conditional rarity in Mint State, and price accordingly.

Me, I'm not sure. The lack of detail could be circulation, it could be strike. I lean towards wear - 1880-O's are generally pretty well-struck as New Orleans coins go.

Thanks for the input SuperDave. It's from a son liquidating his father's collection. I've gotten some great stuff over the past few months from this source. Can't find the slightest scratch indicating wear on the breast or cheek. I did get another 1880O from him a few months back that graded out MS-62 from NGC. This one's much better in my humble estimation. Paleoguy

In your shoes, I'd risk the cost of an ANACS slab. I honestly believe they'll send it back AU55-58, but I'm a gambler.

Even so, it's one of those kick-butt AU coins which stomps anything below MS65 in terms of eye appeal. You're a winner either way.

Personally I feel like it is an AU-slider AU-64.

I'm with SuperDave on this one, IMO it's an AU-58.

AU-55 IMO. The cheek is a bit dull from friction and the fields show a similar hazy, dull surface, especially behind Miss Liberty's head. I think the weak detail over the ear, the eagle's breast, and the right (facing) wing is only partly due to strike weakness. These areas are lightly worn.
