A AU-58 may or may not be a breath away from MS-64/63, it depends on the particular coin. A coin that exhibits MS-64 details but a tiny bit of wear in the hair or other focal point (signs of very light circulation) is thus relegated to the AU-58 grade. Without the slight rub it would be a MS-64. This is also where the term "AU slider" or "AU-63" "AU64" comes from. Report this Post to the Staff
aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 07/13/2010 7:46 pm I do understand the terms Cownas22, Its just that I do see to many coins already in holders with rubs in the prime areas , by the books the number of marks supposedly determine the grade, at least for the past 25 years it was.. I have heard that they are tightening up the standards which is why I asked, what of all the previously graded coins already in holders?Perhaps a new thread on the subject would be a good Idea, I would like to know and understand more, as this effects the over all value of the coin and weather you bought a good deal or just blew too much money on the roulette wheel again!! cownas22 Pillar of the Community United States 1055 Posts	Posted 07/14/2010 12:50 am True, if they do tighten up the standards It becomes even more complex when looking to purchase a coin in a olf rattler vs a coin in a 2009 slab vs a coin in the new "standard" slab... If you send in a coin that was graded a year or so ago would they lower the grade under the tightened standard? Certainly more questions than I have answers Report this Post to the Staff
carmykle Pillar of the Community United States 2448 Posts	Posted 07/14/2010 05:20 am My whole grading premise was due to that ringlet. Most MS63 coins I've seen have a little more definition than seen here. I hate to use any one source for grading and wanted a consensus of sorts. If you go to PCGS Coin Facts and On-line Photo Grade, the ringlet appears "flat" through the MS64 grade. Not until 65 and higher do you see that the ringlet has more definition.
