I'll give you a hint. If you're unfamiliar with $3 gold pieces, you will likely undergrade this coin. Edited by Prethen 07/13/2010 9:46 pm

Because of your hint, I'm going with MS62. All the flat spots look like they're the same height. I've wanted to pick up a $3 gold piece but can't justify the cost right now. That looks like a very expensive coin to me!

I too believe it was given an MS62 grade. Looks like a tiny bit of chatter commensurate with MS62.

I think it may have gotten 63 or even possibly 64, just my opinion though.

MS61 - Weak strike near hair, if not AU58

Based purely on price, I'm guessing you picked up an AU slider instead of a $20000 unc.

I'm more inclined to go with tumbleweed. There appears to be some high point wear, and the luster doesn't look as strong on the fields outside of the protected area. With that said though, this coin has eye appeal that would blow many low MS coins out of the water, and wouldn't be surprised if PCGS gave it a large bump up for the market grade. I think it would command a huge premium.

I know nothing about grading it but it looks like XF45 to me. No offence intended. I'd love to have one like it.
I need to edit and say along with that, I see no problems or wear at or on the rims and edges, so maybe the dies were filled with gold dust and grease and it is a higher grade, but I'll leave my guess as it is. We'll all learn something here I bet. Thanks.

Looks like about 35% luster on the obverse and 75% on the reverse. Grade about AU-50 so PCGS probably AU-55.

Definitely worn, with luster almost completely absent from the obverse fields. Strictly speaking I couldn't go any higher than EF-45, but if the 1867 is particularly known for weak strikes maybe it could go AU-50. It shows significantly more wear than my 1879 $3 coin which is in a PCGS AU-53 holder.

I would go for an AU even if I COULD afford a $20k coin....I don't see the point in paying 8x as much for something that looks imilar.
