EF-45 I suspect this coin was cleaned and retoned ,, Just a little too much wear to make AU.

its actually not toned at all, its white and I see no signs of any cleanning on the coin but I guess it could have been at some point. It does have some scratches and nicks on the coin but I just figured those were from circulation

I read all the comments this time. I tend to agree with Rick's initial impression that it might have been cleaned. On the obverse, the parallel scratches running at about 80 degrees from the vertical are more typical of cleaning than circulation in my observation. I've also seen similar lines as a result of reflection from the plastic in a 2x2 flip, but I don't think this is in a flip (or is it?). I'll go along with the EF-45, might even go up to AU-50 based on the hair wear above Lady Liberty's ear and forehead; the presence of so much feather detail on the Eagle's breast would put it well into the AU grades, but we all know the TPGs give 75% of the grade on the obverse. Out of curiosity, do you have some means to weigh it in grams (to 1/10 gram) or grains? Five bucks, huh? You could sell it for melt and double your investment. Or did you trade it off some 7-year old kid who was looking for some candy money out of Pop's coin collection? Give ya six bucks for it... Fred

It could be cleaned but I just marked off the scratches as circulating marks, but I got it from my neighbor when I told him I collected Morgans and he said he had an old dollar coin I could have at face value but I had a 5 in my pocket and when he showed it to me I just told him to keep the whole 5. I have nothing to weigh it with at all but I see nothing that would indicate it being a fake or anything, the reeding looks right and I dont see any cast marks on the coin

Bryan, hie yourself down to your local gun shop and pick up a powder measure. Make sure it has the range for large coins (say, up to 500 grains). Or go on ebay: Powder Measures. They can be electronic (digital) or mechanical, cheap or expensive. Mine is an RCBS balanced-beam mechanical type which cost about $30 some 25 years ago. Powder measures weigh in grains, not grams which isn't accurate enough for coin work; besides, the original specs for US silver dollars was in grains. A Mint State Morgan will weigh 412.5 grains, uncirculated will weigh measurably less; e.g., a G-06 79CC Morgan I have weighs 398.2 grains. Since this is the second time this subject has come up recently, I'm gonna start a separate thread on coin weights and measures under Main Coin Forum. Fred

I agree it has been cleaned, not only in the fields but also on the head do you see these marks .. If it were just in the fields, some may say its bad die polishing etc. I would say EF but not sure of that paticular (year and mint mark), if the breast feathers were weak or not. the feathers are good through out the wings and the hair is good except the flat hair spot above the ear, this also could be attributed to weak dies common with that series though
