Fake. I'm not happy with those filled letters. I have a fake chinese dollar, and that coin also has the same tone about it's surface. I also have a genuine 1937 crown in EF. Looks quite different to this one.

for supposed condition of coin letters in AUSTRALIA shouldn't be filled, should be sharp lettering, C in crown especially

I think it is a real coin , very very warn ( grade Good maybe very good with a stretch of the imagination ) & heavily cleaned which would explain what looks to be filled letters,i blew the picture up & it looks to me that it is some sort of cleaning material ( like a paste ) left in the letters to make it appear like their filled.

I am no expert but it looks fake to me the S,R and A's in Australia don't look right to me. I have seen many of these coins and never seen them filled in like that. That's just my opinion though and I could be completely wrong.
Cheers Bryan

Hi Moly! Yours look real because of the clear "KG" under crown right side The pic of my replica is below: and the previous thread is https://goccf.com/t/54114Note the smudge beside the crown Rev, resulted when I rubbed out the silver plating, btw - its magnetic, sticks to a magnet like glue

I have a 1857 sydneymint and under the 7 their is a 5, I have enlarged it on computer and its their, I did some reading and this has been found on some 1857 halfs as they used some 1855 patterns left over but my coin is a full sov, does that make it a mule or overdate and what price range would it be in or have you heard of any others like , its EF but low end.

Given that it's a common date coin this lessens the chance of it being a fake because real ones in that condition can be had for $20-25. I'd say that's a real coin, formerly toned heavily that has since been cleaned (badly) with silvo or something similar. Note all the debris still present in the protected areas, the white stuff in some of the letters is the remnant of the cleaner. Coin is worth AUD$14-15 as bullion.

Aside from the magnet test the coin looks cleaned and "re-toned" with some of the letters not taking the color. I would be more suspect if it was the '38. Maybe post a wanted notice for a better example, like original luster. .

The 37and 38 crowns are made of sterling silver 92.5 the KG on the reverse stands for George Kruger Grey. The real crowns are very clearly silver in appearance, they weigh28.27grams and are 38.5 in diameter, there was not supposed to be a 1938 coin because the 37 marked the coronation of the king. The 1938 coin is worth far more than the 1937. Hope this info has been helpful. Cheers Merv from Aus.

sorry Merv, the 1938 was issued, after about 1,000,000 were minted. They were unpopular - too big - and so 900,000 of the 1938s never left the treasury: they were recalled, and sold to China. Apparently, they were re-struck there. Hence the greater price for 1938, compared to 1937. I have a beautiful fake 1937: it weighs 20 grams, and is magnetic, but it would be difficult to pick without a hands-on examination. Peter in Darwin
