On July 14th a counterfeit coin sold on ebay for $36. The auction has all of the red flags and there is no doubt the coin is a modern forgery.

It will likely re-appear on ebay shortly and should be avoided. So I thought I would post a picture of it so anyone interested might pause before bidding.

You are right swamperbob.
The edge of the coin is too big and perfectly centered.
For me anything that comes from that location is already a big redflag. One thing sad though is the mere fact that those people tend to use very much of their time in doing counterfeits, or they make a living fooling by a lot of people...
How I wish your book about these modern counterfeits would soon be available in the market

All these forgeries are giving ebay a bad name. Despite the effort of concerned members, ebay continues to absolve and tolerate this practice. Moreover, it's membership is so wide that it has become a gold mine for forgers.

I had bought fakes way back in the 1990s, so it already existed back then. It's just this explosion of 'Chinese capitalism' that aggrevating this problem. Good for the serious collectors who seek to be informed, but a shock for those who are just starting.

But - not only are we limited to modern fakes, we also have to tackle the contemporary counterfeits.

All collectors need to educate themselves about the hobby before spending much money. Unfortunately until most people get burned they rarely spend time on gaining the required expertise.

It certainly goes to prove the old adage "Buy the Book BEFORE the coin" - Aaron R. Feldman

So Bob, where's your book so we can all buy it and be better educated coin buyers? We are all waiting for you to publish.

However, not all types has/had detailed study readily available to the masses.

Just for starting novices, it would also be nice to give a general guidance on which to look for -- example casting bubbles, wear inconsistencies, design inconsistencies, etc. Plus, maybe (although a double-edge sword) a dealer/trader/seller/buyer feedback thread?.
