Do the published mintages for 2002-present Kennedy half dollars NOT include the coins in the US Mint sets? In other words to get the total mintage of 2002 P do I add the published mintage of 2002 P business strikes PLUS the number of 2002 US Mint sets minted that year? |

As far as I know, Mint Sets have always been included in the mintage totals.

They probably are through 2004, but I would bet the 2005 and later mint set totals are NOT added to the business strike totals because of the different finish and the different way the Mint classifies them internally. Notice in the RedBook the mintage of the 1970-D and the 1987's is included with the business strike even though they were mint set only. If you have a later RedBook (mine is 2006) see if the reported business strike mintage take a sudden drop of 800,000 to a million form 2003,2004 to 2005 2006. |

My 2009 Red Book shows: 2003-P - 2,500,000 2003-D - 2,500,000 2004-P - 2,900,000 2004-D - 2,900,000 2005-P - 3,800,000 2005-D - 3,500,000 2006-P - 2,400,000 (estimate) 2006-D - 2,000,000 (estimate) 2007-P - 2,400,000 (estimate) 2007-D - 2,400,000 (estimate) |

I was reading about that somewhere, too Condor, but can't find it. Seem to think that in recent years the mintage of the business strikes for halves is now one number and those for the Mint sets is another number and you have to add those two together to get the full mintage of the half for that year. Just not sure, that's why I posed this question to the forum.
And also if this did happen, what year did it start? 2002? 2005?

The satin finish mint sets started in 2005. I doubt they would have distinguished the mintage number before then, since the mint set coins and the direct ship bags were sourced from the same process. (Although one could easily find it since the mint set totals are published). Since the satin finish coins now come from a separate process, I am almost certain that the mint keeps separate numbers. Whether or not the Red Book ever chooses to provide and separate those numbers is another question. |

From 2005 to present the production numbers would separate off due to the Satin coins being used exclusively in the U.S. Mint sets. I am able to find production numbers for the business strikes, but not the Satin. Anyone have a source?

You need to put [co de] before and [/co de] after the section that you want to use fixed formatting. Also, be aware that using tabs can cause problems; always use hard spaces.  |

Sorry, old habits and all.  Hard space has several meanings. In the context I used it, I meant to use actual space characters, and not tabs. In the context of this forum, just remember to use the space bar to format the text, do not use tabs. Although you cannot use the Tab Key when entering text directly into the forum, you are able to paste tabs from another source (for example, a spreadsheet). These have to be removed since the number of "spaces" in a tab is not consistent between browsers. |

You can derive the mintages of the Satin Finish coins from the Mint Set totals in a given year. |

Thanks, JBuck! I have been looking for the Satin production numbers and have come up with most of them if anyone is interested. It will give me a chance to try my hand at using your code. I remember coding HTML by hand to build web pages about a hundred years ago...

The 2009 production is an estimate based on the number of orders at the mint. To date, a little over 200,000 have been processed for the 2010's. As you can see, these are quite scarce if not downright rare. I think they are very collectible in mint sets as well as in certified coins.
