I'm tempted to put up a "guess the grade" thread, but I'll avoid the suspense... There aren't many slabs in this condition... instead of a Top-Pop it's a Bottom-Bob:

So the story is, each of granddad's Whitman Mercury dime folders had the 1916-D slot filled. The local experts helped identify the two that really had no mintmark and we sent one off to find an altered mintmark, but they were a little busy the day I brought this one in, so they said, "if you wanna be sure, let's send it in." So our 1916-D came back an authentic 1916-S. Graded FR-2 (with no details!).

Do you think I can get SGS to call is mint state?

Does anyone have any slabs graded a "1" from any of the TPGs?

Here are closer views of this beauty:

Believe it or not, there's an active subset of collectors seeking the lowest-graded coins possible. It's particularly popular with Morgan dollars; I'm involved with it myself. That's the reason for my avatar coin.

They're called "Lowball Sets," and yes, P01 coins are the Holy Grail of the collection. PCGS has a sizable group of Lowball Registry sets:

The current #1 Morgan Lowball set (a complete set of 97 coins) has an average Sheldon Scale grade of 1.92.(!)

ooh - I could give those Liberty nickel sets on the link a run for their money! That's pretty entertaining. So, could you crack the slab and carry the coin in your pocket for a month & resubmit? :) Very cool.

I'm currently carrying a 1921-S pocket piece with that goal in mind.

Speck, I believe that this dark corner of numismatics is mainly for those who have it all already. With no trophies left to search for, they turn to the obscure, the unwanted, the virtually unidentifiable. (Then there are a few folks who may dabble in low balls because they can't afford a nice VG coin).

I know that Dave is quite the expert on distinguishing things like MS 67 from MS68, so there you have it.

I saw one of these in an PCGS holder at my local coin shop a couple months of go for 10$. I assumed the same thing happened, speculative 1916D turns out to be 1916s. Looking back on it I wish I wouldve bought it for heck of it. But at the time 10$ seemed a lil high for a FR2 1916s even if was slabbed!

That's the impression I had of folks who assemble a 7070 full of holed coins... an inexpensive way to gather otherwise nice coins.

Quite the contrary, at least with regard to Morgans. Well-circulated examples can be very, very difficult to find as many of the Morgans still extant can be traced to Treasury hoards which remained in bags from the day they were minted. They were not all that popular as circulating coinage, especially in the East.

Some of the greatest Condition Rarities among Morgan dollars are P01's. A select few are extremely scare in any Circulated grade.

I guess I'm really the wrong type of collector or just cheap. I really couldn't imagine myself spending the money to send a coin in for grading if it was in that poor condition. Yet at coin shows I do see them all the time. Same with brand new coins. Sending in a 2010 Dime out of change for grading is just not someting I understand.
