I smoke...I know, nasty bad habit, blah blah blah...anyhow...
My usual sitting place for my nasty habit is a bar stool pulled up to the chest freezer in the garage...coffee and something to read sitting on the freezer, dog at my feet, birds chirping, etc. Odd enough that I own my house, live in it alone much of the time, and STILL will not smoke inside. I don't like the smell of it - fancy that.
Yesterday morning I sat at my usual sitting place for my coffee and pre-work smoke and saw that my son had brought the mail part-way inside. It ended up on the chest freezer where I sit for a smoke. Next to the mail was a copy of "Coins" magazine that had sat there for about a week untouched. I cracked it open and began to read.
Much to my surprise and amazement, when I reached page 20 I found a full-page article about me and my 2005 book, "Looking Through Lincoln Cents." Now here was not only a book review of a book published years ago (not sure I get that), but a book review being "discovered" for the first time by the author of the book as a geneal subscriber of the magazine.
Does it not make sense that the author of the article might want to contact the author of the book he's reviewing for a "hi, howya doing...and by the way..." before publishing the article? Maybe a couple of comments by the book author to be inserted as "exclusive interview" quotes by the magazine.
Don't get me wrong here - I appreciate the review and the exposure, and was pleasantly surprised to see the article. I just feel a bit odd about having discovered a full page of a magazine dedicated to my work without ANY prior notice. Makes me seem like the fool when I don't even know there are articles about my work out there.
I guess this is the main reason why I subscribe to ALL the coin magazines - I never know when my name might just pop-up and I never knew it was going to be there.

Interesting. You would think that it would be professional courtesy to reach out and notify someone that you were about to do an article about, especially writer to writer.
Hopefully, the review was good and I'm sure that it was.
Speaking of the book, is 2005 still the last year published? If so, are there any plans to update it?

Congrats! It does seem weird that they wouldn't call you and let you know. I'm later today I'm going to pick up the mag and read the article.

Right now my future publishing plans are up in the air. I WILL publish another book, and probably this year...but there are two directions to take with said book, and I'm not sure which way I want to (or can) go right now. I should know more inside a couple of weeks as I put writing the book into high gear.

You shouldn't feel foolish at all. The fool was the author of the article that blew an opportunity to insert "exclusives" that pertain to the subject matter of the book and the hobby the book endorses. Go figure!! He'll probably be reporting for CNN soon. nlp

If I'm doing a book/product review, I don't contact the author unless they supplied me with the book or I do want a quotation/clarification/etc. It would just cost me more time.

I regularly review books, and I consider it unethical to contact the person whose book I am reviewing. This might come from the rules when I review scientific journal articles, where it is outright illegal to contact the authors before hand.
For books, someone contacts me to review a book, sends me a free copy, and I write what I want. If I contact the writer, they will invariably want to read it before it goes to print, and then will invariably make changes/suggestions. I have more freedom by not contacting them. I don't have anything to gain by 'giving them the head's up', and feel that in the absence of an advanced copy of what I wrote would just put them on edge.

Hmm, interesting comments.
I guess this is just the first time a full aricle centering on my work has come out and I didn't even know it was coming out. I would think a note from the publisher or author of the article letting me know it was out there would be - well, nice.
Like I said - I'm happy it's out there and there is at least mainstream attention on my work. I just thought it was odd that I found out about the article on the same day as all the other subscribers.

It will never happen to me, but I would certainly appreciate at least a hint that the article was gonna be written and published.

no not odd. the review is of the book not about the author . Many times when a reviewer interviews the author its for a bio and mentions his work and other works. Now if he wanted to get some bio or interview then he would have contacted you. The reviewer is not promoting the book or trying to unpromote it nor does he care if it sells more copies or if someone says they dont want to buy it becuase of the reviews . He gives a review ether way wether the author likes it or not. Most times if the author is contacted and gives additional info the article is not viewed as a review it is looked at with another agenda of promoting the book.
now if the reviewer likes the book he might suggest it and other works by the same author.

I get it...but again, it would have been nice to have known after the effect that an article had been written and it would be in the next issue. Just a head's up to the book author. Seems the 'courteous' thing to do in my opinion.
