I have some junk buffs that I got roll searching. I have decided to try to restore the whole coin rather than the date. They have been in the vinegar for 4 days now. How long will it take until the dates start to show? I know some people don't like this but I thought it would be fun to try. Does anyone have any experience with this method?

Yes, I have very good experience with vinegar
but I don't use a coin, I use a fish.

I think, you'll find some other posts with the vinegar method.

It seems to me some have left them in soak for weeks, if not months.

My son and I always put dateless nickels in vinegar. Sometimes, the date never shows up--but usually, it takes about a week; some have taken six weeks or more.

Vinegar is a very weak acid, it will take far too long. Go to a hardware store and get a bottle of muratic acid, it's much stronger. Be sure to take all safety precautions.

I put 2 Liberty nickels in vinegar last week. One had a partial date showing and the other was totally gone. The partial date was visible after 2 days and I was able to read the date on the blank coin 6 days later. They both turned out to have dates of 1888.

Sometimes the vinegar will start to turn a pale blue. If it does, just change it.

huh, I never heard of this. I have to go through my buffs now!

If I find something to experiment on, I'll try to post before and after pics.
Rest in Peace

I have some photographic stop bath that some day I intend to use on some dateless nickels - it's concentrated acetic acid with an agent that will cause it to turn purple when exhausted. I probably need to dilute it a bit first, though.

Also, works a little on salads. And if you use the White WINE Vinegar, even better. For coins the main thing to remember is after using on a coin, don't place on your salads.

How long would say to leave them in the muriatic acid Thad? Also if any one does decide to use this method PLEASE do it outside and use a glass container because the acid will melt some plastics. Keep a box of backing soda at hand just in case you do get some on you so that you can neutralize the acid right away.

Just today day 5 I am starting to see a date on one of them. It looks like a 1916. I noticed that you have to change the vinegar every other day. I think it's working out nicely. I don't want to use a stronger acid because I'm afraid I'll burn the buffalo. I think this way being much slower is better for making a quality restore.

I've done this a few times over the past couple months - and actually put 10 mintmarked Buffs in White Vinegar this morning, and by this afternoon I had one date showing up already.

I have another 38 that have ben soaking since last week.

I think it's fun to watch the date come up gradually over time. I think I'll go check ours right now (we've got four V nickels and a Shield nickel soaking).

I've looked, and if I really strain I can see a couple numbers here and there, but they were returned to the soak today, with clean vinegar. I'll check again Saturday.

I've got another lot of 100 coming in the mail soon.
