Hello everyone,

I just purchased a few 2009 1 oz Libertads and I noticed that they don't have the "blast white" surface like all my other Libertads and Silver Eagles. At first I actually thought that they might have been coated with something because they have more of a "metallic" color than the white surface that I'm used to seeing.

I sacrificed one to do some tests I cleaned it with all kinds of things like toothpaste, lemon juice, acetone and I finally dipped it :(. The color remained on it so I came to the conclusion that that must be the way they are.

Do any of you have a 2009 Libertad that does NOT have a white surface? The best I can do to describe it is that it looks more shiny than normal, it has a "metallic glossy" look to it. The reason I thought it had been coated with something is because when I put some water on it the water automatically beaded off of the coin, it reminded me of water on a waxed car or surface it will quickly bead.

Ultimately they're just bullion coins but I am trying to complete a set to display that's why I'm so picky.

Any response is welcomed, I weighed these babies, stuck the magnet to them and they checked out. I tried taking some pics but they didn't come out well enough.

Thank YOU!

I've seen this on ASEs. It might be as a result of striking pressures or reworking of the die.

That description makes me wonder if you possibly could have a non-silver copy. Silver is a dark grey metal when not alloyed with copper. The soft white of coin silver is clearly different, but what you mean by "metallic" stumps me.

This is where Specific Gravity comes in handy - bullion forgeries can be made in non-magnetic white metal with the correct weight of metal. They have a dead - dull look in most cases.

Bullion coins are in fact being copied. So even with nominal value coins be careful.

I wish I could describe it better, to me it looks like I'm looking at a newly struck quarter or some other clad coin. I have some pretty nice clad half dollars in a folder and it looks like the same shade of color. It's just a too shiny look like it was polished.

But maybe I'm too paranoid and picky because my 2008 Libertads and another 2009 that I have are also not that white although these are more noticeable. In any event I'm going on a little day trip tomorrow, but if I get back with daylight I'll take some pics outside and hopefully the images are better than the ones I tried to take indoors.

Anyone know what could have caused the beading of the water, if it is a indication of some layer or coating? My other libertads didnt have that effect and the water stopped beading on these when I soaked them in acetone. Does anyone know if the Mint puts a coat or layer of something on the coins? I will mention that luster is at a minimum considering these are 2009 and they should have full luster.

are you sure your coins are not proof specimens?
Do you know what a proof is?
I can't imagine why anyone will copy a bullion coin and 2009 date!

Which now tells me why the burnished ASEs look so dull. So that's why silver solder cleans up so well; the affects of alloying. Thanks gang, I saw some Libertads but didn't buy them exactly for this reason.

Hello everyone!

I finally got a chance to post.

Hello epop, yes I am very familiar with proof coins as I have a few in my collection and this piece is definitely not a proof.

I did speak to the person who sold me these Libertads and he said they originally came from a set of 8 that he purchaed from a dealer, he said that all of them are like that and he noticied it right away also that they weren't "frosty" like his ASE's.

I have attached a pic of the coin. The one on the right is a normal "white" libertad and the one on the left is my "mettalic" libertad.

The camera didn't really capture what I am talking about and the flash actually made it look darker than it actually is. In any event they are just bullion coins so I wont be so picky with my libertads.

Thanks Everyone!
