I'd say AU-50. I think I can see a little bit of skirt lines on the left leg and some feather detail on the left leg of the eagle.

Also, this type is generally referred to as the Walking Liberty half dollar, or "Walkers" for short.
Rest in Peace

XF40 - not quite sharp enough to be AU (IMO)

I think it is an EF40 or 45 coin...but seeing it hand it may prove to be AU.

My best guess is 40 for the obv, 30 for the rev, plus the dings in the wing and the not-so-great toning net it 30 - 35 overall. The obverse is strong, but as has been said, not sharp enough to pull the reverse up.

Also, these are known as "Walking Liberty" half dollars - the "standing" is the quarter (SLQ). Still one of my very favorite coin designs ever - this coin is BEAUTIFUL. =) I'd love to add an MS to the collection one day!

Nice coin Montana!

Does toning affect the grade? Or is it all based on wear?

Generally, toning will not affect a grade. The coloration on this coin looks more like tarnish (dark splotches) and I personally think that would affect the grade since it is "eye appeal". It could be that at one time, it had a dark appearance all over the coin and someone tried to dip it to remove it and didn't get it all off. Gradewise, I'd go with XF40, just not enough detail on the Eagle to push it higher. A nice coin any way you cut it and they don't make 'em like that anymore.

On this coin? No effect at all. And there is nothing on this coin that says "VF".
