I just got ICG to slab it. It wasn't necessary to do that other than the fact that this coin is so darn small and I really wanted a nice way to preserve it and show it off. Plus, I love the ICG holder. I really wanted a nice coin representative of very, very early coinage. This one is so cool! I love the high relief Athena's Helmet. The wheel with META looks like it was minted in this century. [You might have to click on the slab picture to see the enlarged version of it.]

Ah - a budding ancients collector! Welcome to the "Oldside"!

While ancients collectors are typically more averse to slabbing than collectors in other areas, for these particular coins I'm happy to make an exception, for authenication purposes at least.

The reason? The notorious "Black Sea Hoard" of the late 1980's contained vast quantities of fake Mesembrian diobols. It wasn't until 1993 that the fraud was confirmed and generally agreed upon - by which time many had entered the marketplace as genuine. Those fakes have a distinctive "look" to them, and thankfully this one doesn't have that look.

Very nice coin, you were wise to get it slabbed for the reasons expounded by Sap above.

If dealers/collectors didn't learn a lesson from the "Black Sea Hoard", they sure did from the "New York Hoard" (http://rg.ancients.info/bulgarian_s...eries.html). I avoid Appollonia Pontika drachms to this day...
