I'm in a bit of a quandry here, folks. As you can see, both coins in the scan are dated 1873, but there is a slight difference in the gap of the threes.
Do I have two 1873s with closed 3s, or do I have a closed 3, and an open 3?
Being unsure, I went ahead and bought an 1873 open 3 (second photo) but now I don't know if I have two closed threes or two open threes.....
I surely do need some help with this one. Thank you.

Ralph

Ralph, I don't have a lot of experience with this variety, but from the pics I would say the one on the upper left is an open 3 and the upper right is a closed 3. The pic of the GSC is surely an open 3 which would support the previous statement. Upper left appears to be a nice original VF (maybe VF30) while it looks like someone did something rather distasteful to the one on the right...... cleaned it in something probably. Otherwise, it might make a VF20.

Dcreek1968, the coin on the right doesn't look that pale in hand. I had to enhance )contrast, brightness) the scan because the left hand coin is pretty dark, and I wanted it to show up well.
Yes, side by side, in the scan, there is a noticable difference in the threes, but, in hand, it's more difficult to see that difference. Guess that's what prompted me to buy the GSC coin. I'll, most likely, give the darker one to my sis (I give her all my duplicates) and put the GSC dime in my album.
