My name is Darryl and I have posted in your new member section to introduce myself.

I am not even sure if I am starting in the correct forum for what I want.

I have $600. plus in face value of 1964/earlier silver coins. I have them seperated by denomination.

I am trying to determine the best way to dispose of these coins and am trying to seperate them by condition however I know nothing about coin values other than melt value. I don't want to send good coins to the melter as many I am certain many have a higher then melt value.

I have scanned some examples of what I have but the file size is too large to post here. The pictures are of several coins per picture and some have envelopes above them from either coin shop sales or grading from about 20 years ago with what I think are gradings on them. If I reduce the size to post they will not be large enough for anyone to tell me anything about them. I am wanting to know if the experts here agree with the grading on these coins and some sample evaluations?

Also, can someone tell me where to find the melters that buy these old coins?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
Rest in Peace

to the forums. Personally, I would recommend not sending ANY of them to the melters. First thing to do is to buy a redbook(price guide). Read about the various types of coins you have, and hang around the forums. It sounds like you have a mini silver hoard. I would separate all of them into the specific denominations and type, and then analyze each group individually, look up the date and mintmark for value estimates in the RedBook. Although the RedBook prices are often way too high, it will still give you a general idea about the value. When you have a general idea of what you have, start learning to grade. The RedBook gives you basic instructions for that too. You can post pictures of the "better" coins on these forums.

Once you know what you have, there are many ways of selling them for their full value without melting them. ebay, a local dealer, and you can sell on the forums too once you have a high enough post count.

Good luck, and please post pictures along the way! We all love coin pictures!!

Hello Darryl, and welcome.

First, any 90% silver USA coin will fetch around twelve times face value, unless it is extremely worn or damaged. The easiest way to sell is to find local coin shops and get their best offers. Before doing that get ahold of the Guidebook to United States coins by RS Yeoman (the Red Book). You can probably find a copy at a library. Look up your coins by date and mintmark to determine if you have higher-value pieces. Use the prices shown in the book as relative indicators on value. Then try posting images of any better-date examples and we'll try to advise you.

There are many other threads on this site about people trying to value collections. Lots of good information!

Lots of good information, as stated... You might also look at a Blue Book (although it may be harder to find than the Red) since you're not interested in collecting, but rather, selling fairly. =)

And again welcome! You've come to the right place, a lot of good information can be found here, and I've found the people here to be extremely helpful!
