Ok, so I was given my mother in laws collection of pennies (i posted abou this before). Anywhoo, I was looking at them, and I saw this 1947 S penny from the back. What the heck!! There's metal stuck to the back of it. Anyone know how this could have happened? Do you think it was done by mistake while making it? Just a side note, it's on there thicker than it looks.

It looks like it might have been on the ground/floor and caught a welder's dropping or something like that. Anyone else?

Yep, I agree with dsking- to the extent that it could also have been someone fooling around in a metal plating shop. You know the place where they put chrome on bumpers and the like. I got one in change the other day that was really cleaver-just like it had been dipped- to make it look like a steel penny. There are a lot of people out there and some who know collectors who get their kicks out of plating pennies. With this one in question- it is simply a globby mess that got in the way (IMHO) Dewey

That's the word I was searching for last night - Welder's solder or very old and shiney chewing gum (just kidding). Sorry suvoth but it seems that the general concensus here is the same and the penny is pocket change at best. I don't think that the glob can be removed without damaging the coin and it wouldn't be worth it at this point for you to try. It's Copper, yes but, a 47S is not big money anyway. Maybe just a little Mother-In-Law memory for you!

It's like looking at clouds sn31...I see the horse too now that you mention it! I wonder if that's what suvoths Mother-In-Law saw also and that's why she kept it. Good observation sn31!!!!! No a great one! I think that you may have solved this "mystery"!
