I was looking at the mintage numbers for SLQs and found something very surprising. The mintages for most of the D and S mint coins from 1926-1930 are similar in mintage numbers to some of the semi-keys for the set. Consider...
1926D - 1.7M
1928D - 1.6M
1929D - 1.4M
1929S - 1.8M
1930S - 1.6M

But all of these are essentially common date price

Compared to
1919D - 1.9M
1919S - 1.8M
1921 - 1.9M
1923S - 1.4M

Which are all semi-key price. Is the majority of this difference due to the date wearing off more easily for the earlier coins, or were the later coins hoarded, or what is going on here? Note that the trend does not hold true with the 1927 D and S, especially the S (though with a mintage of only about 1/4 of the others, this might be more obvious).

I'd sure like to THINK it has to do with survivability....

I would guess that it has to do with wear as you have, but I am very interested in seeing what others, specifically SLQ collectors, have to say.

The survival rate of the 1925-30 SLQs is much higher because of the change to a recessed date.

I agree with bio, and what Nod said. The vast majority of pre-25 slqs are worn past the point of being identifiable, so none of them would count in the slq population for various dates, making the ones with identifiable dates that much more scarce.

Yes 1925-30 survived well, but pre-1925 dates wore off, sort of like teen and early 20 Buffalo nickels. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a decent way to restore dates on SLQs. I've tried many methods without success.

Mostly due to the first reason.

If Steev's slq wonder potion works, and he sells it to all dateless slq hoarders; all of our keys and semi-keys may turn into common dates... Of course there will always be a premium for the "original date" slqs. I dont think that would ever happen, but it would be an interesting hypothetical scenario.

I've looked at those mintages before too, and believe (my opinion only) that the 26D and 29D are undervalued in EF and above.

Honestly though - once you get into AU range on even the 25-30 SLQ's - they start acquiring a nice premium for coins with nice luster and shield and head details.
