I found this nickel while roll hunting and I'm not sure what it is. It looks as if it wasnt stamped properly during the minting process, but I'm not sure. It was minted in Denver in 2000. I was just wondering what it is exactly and if it is a real error or somebody just messed with it, and if it has any value other than being a nickel.

im not sure why, but the scanned picture shows jefferson much more clearly when you view the coin in person. You can sort of make out the date and mintmark with this picture.

Struck through a capped die. For an explanation of how it occurs, look at my post in this thread towards the bottom of the 1st page. Nice error, there was another 2000-D posted a few days ago.

i took it to my coin shop and the person at the couner said it wasnt worth much but he said he would give me a Mercury dime for it, its a common date but one that I need for my album. Would it be worth trading it? It is the first true error coin iv found.

I'd say it's worth more than a circulated Mercury dime, they aren't really that common. An uncirculated or AU Mercury of a better date would be a good trade. I'm nearing 100,000 nickels searched and haven't come across one.

wow this find is better than I expected. I dont usually search nickles only halves, but when I found this one I just kept it. I just remembered about it a couple days ago so I decided to put it up.

I was searching ebay for an auction to get a price range for this coin, but none were listed at the time. I did stumble across a different auction for an error quarter that I did manage to pick up. Sorry I couldn't find a price range for you.
