I have handled a 400 ounce gold bar in the Perth Mint, Western Australia, in much the same way as the picture in the lead post of this thread. 400 ounces at $1200 /oz equates to $480,000.

Sad to say but I would bet it was melted within hours of being stolen.

If I were a betting man, and I am , I would bet it's either melted by now or will soon be melted. I would think that they already had everything set up to melt it before they stole the bar.

I hate the thought of anyone that steals like that ..
And then I am thinking ..
Sounds like a few of the members here .. have their finger prints all over that bar ... interesting thought ..

What a shame. A little piece of history gone forever. I can't stand a thief.

I posted to this but don't see my op. I have also been there and held it. I hope they get it back and throw the thieves in jail for a long time.

Hey sel, I handled that Perth bar as well. I kept thinking, what if someone brought a pocketknife and started shaving the edges. Gold is a soft metal.

Man....I'm quite sure a lot of people took a lot of risk, expense and effort to make a genuine piece of history available to the public....and look what happens. Look at that kid's face, he'll remember that moment for the rest of his life- not many people have or will ever get to hold a cool half a mill in their hand and now it's most likely gone forever. This is a sad statement of human affairs.

Man that is sad,the article says it is 74.85 Oz. At todays price of $1,220, that equates to approximately a measly $91,317.00 of gold. The value of the bar is insured at $550,000 because of its history. Now all of that will be lost because somebody is going to melt that down for under a $100K worth of gold.

Any update? That's not much gold (less than one contract) and wouldn't take much to melt, losing 80% of its insured value.
If Fisher's people were smart, they'd have made a heavily gold plated tungsten copy, and let people lift it all they wanted. Maybe they did, and this was a charade to catch the crooks.
Thieves did some major time for stealing some very expensive comics from a store, even tho what they got were display dummies of originals locked in the vault. That would be enuf to anger the Vatican's head spaghetti-bender.
I recall someplace in Yurrup had a 400 oz au bar on display, if you could lift it with one hand, you could have it.
Lots of muscle-building practice paid off handsomely for one guy. They figured between the density of it and the tapered sides, it couldn't be done. A few hundred thousand dollar error on their part.

I would guess the bar has been sliced up and melted to look like something else all together different. Even if it loses most of it's historical value the thieves will still have plenty of bullion value. Maybe they are holding on to it while gold prices rise.
If it is returned I'm sure the museum will no longer allow visitors to handle it. The gold will be locked in a secure display and stored in a vault at night.

That would be the red flag if I was investigating. There's a six-figure, easily converted to cash chunk of metal that weighs less than a gallon of milk, and it's too much trouble to lock up at night?

Think anybody would notice if the culprit listed a new rare Key West gold bar recovered from a Spanish ship wreck on ebay with starting bid at 550,001 ?
