Howdy folks. My father in law was in town this past week and pulled this out of his pocket and gave it to my wife. She of course asked what it was and he told her to give it to me for an explanation. So, I took some photos, and tried to give it back to him. he said "Nahhh", it's just sitting in my toolbox in the shop anyway, keep it and do what you want with it. :) Very lucky are we. Of course he realized the melt value of the coin, but he also knew I was a collector. What to do, what to do..... get it graded so I have a protective slab? Not sure.

Anyway, thoughts on grade? I'm thinking somewhere around VF20?

Now that's something one of my in-laws never did for us! What a great guy. OK, what did he do? You better check before you get too ecstatic. I remember serendipitous gifts or declarations of love from my kids before I found the not so pleasant reason.

INHO, Looks VF30 to me, but I'm not a gold man. The $10 circulated Coronets (Liberty Heads) were really beat up but this looks pretty good. It's worth approximatly $800. I'd send it off.

Oh the Father In-Law quip; forget about it, he'll just plead temporary insanity anyway. Insanity is hereditary you know, we get if from our kids.

Very nice gift! Please tell your father-in-law to keep coins like this out of his pocket - very politely of course.

Looks like a common date circulated piece so there's no need to spend money having it slabbed. It might go as high as EF40 but that's still going to be considered a bullion piece. It melts at $595 today and figuring a 15% numismatic premium, I'd value it around $700.

Looks like XF and looks cleaned. If a 3rd party grading service agreed with me on the cleaning it won't slab (other than Genuine).

You are a lucky guy to have gotten this coin as a gift.

Both sides of the coin still have some details like the stars and the olive branches. The coin has large marks which will not be a good contender for a beauty contest yet I would say that you have an EF-40, maybe an EF-45.

You will get a little bit more if you have it slabbed but it all depends where you will sell it.

I'd certainly go higher than VF-20. I don't know if it would make XF-40, but is probably a VF-35. However, the fields do seem to have some evidence of light cleaning/polishing.

Looks original to me. I don't know about EF, but a VF-30 or 35 makes more sense. Kinda rough in the fields on the obverse but there are good star details and there is wear showing in the hair lines. The reverse looks good, but the wear on the eagles' feathers is what puts me in the VF range. Nice coin and nice father in law. Wow!!

It could be just the picture, but the coin (esp. obverse) has a flat color to it that makes me think cleaning.
Rest in Peace
