Forgive me as I am not a nickel guy. (Morgan and Peace dollar dude here) What makes this special? I can tell from the price it is probably rare and the grade is almost perfect, so why is it worth so much more than a regular MS69 1994-P? I assume it is the matte finish, but whats the difference? Are Matte's found in circ? 6 steps I understand and that is a full strike. help out an aspiring jefferson noob.

Matte finish was only available in a special low mintage set.

It was produced for the Jefferson coin and currency set of 1994, there were 167,703 minted making it the second rarest coin of the series. The only rarer issue was the 1997 matte nickel. MS 69 is the top grade for ANACS on this issue, though pcgs and or ngc have graded a handful of ms 70.

Hi X-O-G, You know I am looking! Is the reverse of this coin a bit more toned than the obverse. That would be typical. Thank you.

XofG, interested also. Let me wait a coule days to see where it goes. I think the chances are null find one in a roll. I take that back, everything can be found in rolls.

This is clearly an exceptional coin, the grade is also exceptional, I too will be Checking in, I know WD, which I consider the resident Jefferson expert, has got to have a few of these, and probably has a MS69 Also, this alone will tell you just how rare this coin, in this grade is..... The 1994 in MS65 cats for about $75.00, The 1997 in MS65 cats for about $200.00.....

Heres the reverse, very light toning on top of reverse. Usually on this issue there is heavy yellow toning on reverse. As for finding one of these in a roll, I think it would be very difficult to distinguish a circulated matte from a circulated brilliant finish example. -XoG

I have this coin in the 1994 coin and chronicles set, I just would not remove it, I also collect mint/proof sets. I also have this coin, slabbed by ANACS, MS68-FS, MS70-FS, only the 70 is not in the top 3 TPG'S, looks very sharp, but not sure I would grade it a 70, and now, once received the same coin by ANACS, MS-69,This coin is with-out a doubt on of the keys to the "complete" Jefferson series, Thanks for the chance to have this coin in my collection....PS, I wonder if any one has removed the 1997 Nickel found in the Botanical Gardens set,1997 Jefferson nickel, another key in the series coin which has the matte finish also, has the higher premium to, and had it slabbed,I would love to see those pictures anyone?

The MS-70's are rediculously hard to come by. Theres probably less than half a dozen slabbed between ngc and pcgs combined. Anacs has not grades any 70's so far.
