Help I have been trying to research this coin for the value without a lot of Luck. 1911 Liberty Head Nickel with straight clip, coin is in very good condition I can read the RTY of Liberty on the crown. Is the black sintered, copper washed? Hope someone can help me.

Hello, and

The clip could be an error or it could be post-mint damage. Close examination would be needed to tell for sure. If it is a genuine error I'd guess the value might be in the $10 range to an error collector. If it's damage the coin would be worth a buck at most IMO.

The black color looks like corrosion. It is certainly unattractive and would reduce whatever value the coin would otherwise have.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. The black is not corrosion, it is slick and kind of shiny does not rub off. I will try to get a picture of the rim on here tomorrow.
Rest in Peace

This oldtimer would describe the nickel as environmentally damaged. I do not believe it has a clipped planchet. Such errors typically evidence a curvature or arc where the metal is absent. I've long given coins like this to kids or left them with tip money at a restaurant. They tend to stimulate one's curiosity, eh what?
