  This is an excellent coin IMO, but I have a few questions.... 1. Do you believe this coin has been wiped or dipped? 2. What would you grade it? 3. Approximate value (I know I could look on heritage, just looking for some opinions. I'm also aware the coin probably should be in a slab but I am taking that into account)

I'd say VF35 but it looks like it has been cleaned or dipped before. The color doesn't look right.

On the upside, it seems to me as if there is some luster in the protected areas...just a touch?

Maybe...I've learned that different coloring around the bases of the raised features shows a past cleaning. Nonetheless it still is a nice looking coin!

I am definitely suspicious of that and brought it up with the seller. We'll see what he has to say. I've dealt with him in the past and hes pretty reliable.
I more meant btw that even with the possible dipping/cleaning, there appears to be some natural 'shine'.

Nice looking coin. It may have been cleaned, but not recently. I'd grade it EF-40 and give it an estimated value of $1200.

I would say the coin has been lightly cleaned and is starting to retone.

Looks EF to me. The fields do have a "cleaned up" appearance relative to the areas around the devices but let's face it, most 200 year old coins have had something done to them at some point by somebody. I don't see this as hurting the value too much. There's a big jump in value from VF to EF for this piece and I'd say $800 would be a fair price IMHO.

I agree with bherring. Possible old dipping/cleaning, but its not overly distracting imo. Nice lookin coin!

Shadow, that is one nice looking coin. I'm going to say VF-35 to possibly EF-40. I ususally look for more detail in the hairlines and on the reverse around the eagle's talons, arrows and feathers. Is that a die clash above the 25C? I also agree with the others that maybe it has been cleaned, but (and I'll repeat) what coin that is going on 200 years old hasn't been cleaned. A keeper in every sense of the word. Congrats!  |

Unfortunately its not mine, but the seller is asking $1500 for it. I think its a bit high and I'll probably offer him closer to $1000, or maybe a partial trade.

$1150 would not be bad. I agree with VF35 SC. May have been lightly cleaned in the past.

I would say no. It's too much of a risk without having it graded. VF20 is $390 and EF40 is $1590. Right now rare coins aren't doing too well and I think the coin would only net VF30 Details. For $1100 I'm sure you could find a better problem free coin. I bet the dealer knows the surfaces aren't original. I would NEVER buy a coin ungraded with such a difference in price between two grades.

Here's one for sale for only $600 and has some nice character especially the die crack. I know the dealer too.   |
