I have a few questions as I search through Kennedy halves. First, the Yeoman RedBook indicates that that since 2002, halves have not been released into circulation. Does this mean that when I find a 2004 for example, that someone pulled it from a mint set? I've been holding on to them but I'm not sure why. Unless they are in unc condition, is there any other reason to hold them? Next, I wanted to quickly write about how I search Kennedy's and would like to know how everyone else is doing it. I open a roll and the first thing I do is look for any obvious silver. Next step is to quickly pull out any good looking sharp edged halves and I put them at the front of the stack and begin checking and inspecting each. I make a pile for dates 71-75 and the rest go back in the box. The only other date I keep an eye out for is 1987. I check the 71-75 pile for DDO's and then start the next roll. I have never found a DDO and it must be a 1 in a million shot. So how does your search difffer?

John, that's exactly how I started almost 3 years ago. I pulled the NIFC's but now just throw them back. I still keep the impaired proofs, but normally only keep one of each now. I no longer search for errors, although I know of another crh forum where many have been found, (1974's). I filled my Kennedy folder very quickly, including the 1970D, which I found very soon into my crh'ing career. Haven't found another since. Good luck in your search. ffd

I check every date and keep all coins pre 1971. I then check the back for the FG. I do not look on the edge for silver because I think it's cheating and you will miss 40%ers. I have gone through hundreds of thousands of halfs and I'm a pro. I can go through a box in 45 min. 2002 and up are only found in mint sets. I only keep one for each mint and that is for my set. You could keep them all but I don't see the value in having them. But the most important part is have fun! Collect and do what you like.

When I search (infrequently now) I check the edges first and pull out the silver in case one of those is an AU barber half or something. Then I look at all the dates to make sure I didn't miss any 40%. I have about $60 face value of 2002 and later JFKs because I can't bring myself to toss a coin with a mintage of 3,000,000 or less into to reject bucket.

Quote: Does this mean that when I find a 2004 for example, that someone pulled it from a mint set? More likely they are from the rolls or bags that the mint sells. Some collectors buy the bags (at a premium) search them for errors or very high grades, and then dump the rest at the bank.

Wow 45 minutes to go through a box is impressive. I'm slow and look at every coin. the 74D DDO is not 1 in a million. I have found 4 or 5 of them now, but the difference is I search customer wrapped rolls. Most people are searching bank boxes, which seem, to be searched for silver already and sivler is drying up in most boxes and I would guess they have already been searched by many (but not all ) for the 74D DDO.

I must be a real slob compared to you all lol I edge search under a bright light and then drop them into a bucket when I see nothing (if I do miss somthing I hear the "ching" of the silver). The bright Light helps alot. I also pull out thick bright copper edges and I check to see if they are proofs. My theroy is if its not bright and full copper its a lousy proof and not worth anything anways. I dont check for DDO's or 87's not worth it on my limited time schedule. I take like 20 min a box if that (deposit in change bag as well). I dont think I miss any silver (the bright light is the key) but if I do the time I save makes up for the $2.50 coin I might miss.. plus more for you all!

Excellent responses. It will surely save me some time if I don't have to search 71-74. I will just check out the 74D and unless something catches my eye, the rest can go back. So what do you think the odds are of finding a 74D DDO? I haven't checked to see what it's worth but I may have to weigh this one. Like a couple of you, I just can't throw back a proof, even if it's scratched up. Like Nod2003, I can't throw back the 2002 and later halves either. I do periodically get to upgrade the dansco though. Great stuff. Thanks guys.
