I've not found anything worthwhile in Antique shops, but I'll still go in w/ my wife and hunt for the coins. Kind of like searching thru rolls - sometimes you win, sometimes not. Keep trying - you never know what might show up.

One sort of nice thing about Antique or pawn shops is even if the sellers are a little aware of coins, they usually don't know to much about possible varieties or errors. Such as with those Mercury dimes. Ever wonder if any of the 42's were 42/41 or 42D/41? 28S, 34D, 41S, 45S micro mint marks? You never know.

One good thing with general antiques sellers is they often have such a broad knowledge that they neglect areas that tend to need a much more specialist knowledge - coins being one of them. That said I hardly managed to pick up any coins on the few trips to antique centres and flea markets in the US, but over here in the UK and over France and Germany you can fairly regularly get some great material

where are these dealers located, who will pay actual spot (14x face) or within 1-2% for junk silver coins. around here, 13.1 was best offer and a often visited dealer tried to offer me 12x face, just last Friday. :( that was him trying to take 15%...

Deadmunny, you assume correctly. It was Morgans. Had it been the 21 Peace dollars I would have went at least $25 on them. I wish I could run up on a bunch for a total of $22.20 each, that would be sweet.

Never had much luck with the places around here. They either have nothing or are over priced.

All of the above comments are good. I do however, have a passing interest in antiques. I go to have a browse occasionally in antiques stores, but the numismatic pickings are usually very poor to non existent.

Australian antique silver of the 19th century is hugely expensive, up there with Paul Revere silver in value, and many multiples more in value than British silver of the same period. Oz has some magnificent Red Cedar furniture, and brings huge prices. Rarely found outside Australia, though.
