What do you guys think ... does this look like doubled 2 in the date or not?
I find it very challenging to distinguish between the subtler doublings and scans light reflectings.
Thanks.
oops need to upload photo to Bucket, sorry and will be back with the image shortly ........ Edited by Dottir 09/03/2010 9:24 pm

MD = Machine Doubling? as opposed to "hub doubling"? and hub doubling is the more valuable type of doubling? I'm just new at learning the terms and how to distinguish them. Thanks for your feedback Adam_E.

remember, this is just my opinion, I'm usually not right, but when it comes to MD (machine doubling, the one with no value) or DD (doubled die, the one with added value), I'm only wrong about 5% of the time.

Anyone regards doubling, is the "DD doubled die" one and the same thing as "hub doubling"? Just so's I get clear here.

If you click on Numismatic Glossary to your left under Reference Links and then look up "hub" and "doubled die" you will find your answer. John1

Ok, lets see if I understand this correctly now.
A true DD is a result of the die itself actually having a double image on it and it strikes that double image, as such.
An MD is a result of a actually perfect imaged die itself shifting during the strike process which causes metal to be pushed and causing what looks like doubled image (misaligned striking)
Do I get it yet? :)

Sounds good! But, keep in mind that doubled dies can MD, too!

Hub doubling and a doubled die are the same thing. Hub doubling is the verb, doubled die is the noun. You are correct with Machine Doubling versus doubled dies as to basically what causes each. Machine Doubling has no premium value...it's not "less" valuable. It has no value at all.

Thanks a lot for more feedback and clarifications Coppercoins. I really appreciate the help people have jumped in with as it's really nice to have other like-interested people to chat and exchange with. Especially when just learning I think I'm starting to get the hang of understanding how to differentiate between DD's and MD's as I'm looking. This last week or two has been like a crash course in cents! I've already covered a lot of ground with reading up and browsing images all over the net, and simply looking at coins I have at hand. Combined with joining this forum, I'm moving along quickly. I'm stirring the pot and cookin' (love the smilies in here!)
