Going through my morning routine of checking sites I came across this link to build a cheap DIY iPhone microscope. I immediately thought that this would be awesome for coin collecting. About 1:10 into the video he starts using it to look at a 2007 LMC.

I went ahead and ordered the scope from Amazon. I have a spare case that I can just pop on whenever I want to use the scope. I can't wait to try this out. I will post results once it comes in.

I bet it would work with lot's of different cameras as long as it can auto-focus. What I am really interested in is using it to sort and look for errors. Pop the coin under the scope, look at it live on the phone or the iPad. I just hope it works well enough to be useful.

That is pretty cool. I have a 3gs iphone. The case is a little more rounded on that so I wonder if it could mount on that or just the 4g

Ok, as promised here are some images from the scope after gluing it to the back of a cheap case. The toughest part of the whole process is getting the scope lined up with the lens of the camera and not getting glue on the lens. I recomend making some marks on the case that line up with the center of the lens and removing the phone before gluing the scope on the back. The images are as follows.

1. 2010 ASE Obverse Head
2. 2010 ASE Reverse (coin I suspect was cleaned)
3. John Adams Presidential dollar Edge (pretty beat up)
4. Women's Hockey Coin from Canada
5. Weird .10 Canadian Coin
6. The scope as mounted on the back of the case

I am very happy with the results and with some practice I am going to find this very useful.
