I picked up a box of full 2010-D nickels from the bank last week and just started through them tonight. I'm finding several nickels with reverses like this with the steps of Monticello missing. Looks to be a significant die variation. I'd say maybe 10-15% of the nickels in my first 4 rolls have had steps like this.

Would you classify it as an error or not? I don't believe it would be die wear as the rest of the devices are rather crisp, but the center of Monticello from the dome to the steps is "muted" with the steps completely missing.

I recognize that it's generally not uncommon for older coins, but I have to say of all the nickels I've looked through (and there are a lot of them) these would be the first of the new design (since 06) that I've seen with this effect. Including 2 full boxes of minty fresh 2008-D's that I've gone through.

It appears to me that your coin was struck with a very worn die. that's all.

This is a cool effect for a simple worn die. Keep those rolls, good to trade later. "No Steps Jefferson" (copyright, 2010 JBC.

You don't need the steps anymore anyway. There is an electric ramp
on the right side entrance, see it. It's in the up position now.
Only for the handicapped though. Others must go around back now to get in.
