Does anyone have an idea what may have caused the image of the "D" next to the 3?

It is not really a D, just zinc rot in the approximate shape of a D. You can see another under 98 of the date and another to the left of the date.

Try to push the "D" down with your fingernail, if it smashes flat it is a bubble under the copper plating or zinc rot.

I think it could be a dropped letter, it looks too uniform to be zinc rot to me.

It doesn't push down like bubbles would but it's in relief not incused like a dropped letter would be. The thing that has me confused is that it occurs under the 3 without distortion of the 3?

Sometimes water spots will leave that ring on a coin.
