One of my all time favorite designs!!
MS-62. Great details with some small marks/nicks all over the open fields.

I am terrible with these. From what I've seen, what looks like wear isn't wear on these guys. I want to say AU 55-58 but Moe's 62 just reinforces my inability to grade these.
Are there any useful tricks to distinguish AU from MS for the $5 Indians?

I would also like to know a little bit more about how to grade these, it seems pretty difficult. I have one in my collection and I think they are great coins!

I'm going with AU58. The eagle's upper wing looks like a rub to me. I could see it going 62 but the price doubles from 58 to 62 and I'd guess a 58 is more likely.

Just comparing your coin with PCGS photo-grade and also PCGS coin facts, I would say Moe is dead on. Still hard to tell without seeing the coins actual luster. The other attributes are there, the center detail of the stars, detail in the headband, feathers and eagles chest as well as the lines in the legends all match to a 62 but also close to a 61. Either way a coin anyone of us would like to own. Great coin.

I'll put the grade that I bought this as tomorrow. I have to admit, these guys can be very tricky to grade. These coins seem to trip up most of the participants in the ANA's grading courses (at least that was the case with mine). You need to initially look at the fields for the higher grade ones since they're the highest points on the coin! I have to look at the grading guide to see what other points need to be reviewed.

I'm with Moe in the AU58 class. I think there is rub on the high point of the eagle's wing....first place it shows up on the reverse. Also appears to be some rub in the indian's headress. I'm also with the group that feels this is one of the prettiest coins ever minted. Great design and great purchase.

Gorgeous.
Just ever so slightly circulated, in my mind, but I'd believe it if described as Mint State. I much prefer the third set of pics; all are good but I like the high contrast of the third set the best.

maybe try a black background? I have 1 gold coin and black really seems to pull out the luster in the photos

Definitely looks like there is some rub in the fields, so AU-58

I really have no idea what the grade on this would be but I'm anxious to see what you had it graded at. I have one of these that I'm debating having graded and slabbed by ANACS, but it's only worth it if it's MS. Even in AU these guys are generally only worth their spot price in gold.

The 3rd set of pics looks best to me but I bet the 2nd set most accurately reflects the coin. Quote: Even in AU these guys are generally only worth their spot price in gold.
These coins contain less than an 1/8oz of gold or about $150 worth. You should be able to get twice that amount ($300) for them in AU. Only heavily worn and/or damaged quarter eagles fall to near melt price.

These coins are not just worth melt, unless they were heavily worn or damaged.

I like the first set of pics are the nicest but like someone set in the forum, pictures of gold coins usually look best with black background.

Worth way more than melt. I'd guess AU-55 to 58, and a very nice type example!
