Can someone please tell me what these six dots on this half dollar are?

The coin seems to be in good condition for an 1856, is this a possible fake?

Coin weighs 12.4 grams.

Any information would be helpful, as I am not a coin collector. I just try to grab these coins from people cashing them in for paper dollars at the local supermarket where I work.

to the community,

Those are holes that have been filled. It's too bad that would have been a nice coin. Now it's just worth melt.

Yup, sadly they are filled holes. The coin was probably either used for jewelry or it was mounted to something and later on down the road someone decided to fill the holes.

Sure it is 'possible' that it is fake, but I rather doubt it. If it were, the creator of those 'dots' would not have taken the time to fill the drill holes which those dots once were. An intended, but failed jewelry piece?

to CCF.

Your coin appears to have been holed and plugged. The weight is good but the Mint State details are not normal for a heavily cleaned/polished piece. It appears to have irregular dentils and the rims are suspect too.

I'd guess it is a fake used in jewelry but someone else might have better information for you.
