I have been looking at this ebay listing for a couple days. http://cgi.ebay.com/1885-Liberty-V-...em2eaff2833bTo me this looks like a fake coin. Yesterday he had a high buy it now listing (couple thousand). Now it has two bids. Can he sell a coin like this .. even if it says he does not know if it is real? I thought to sell a coin like this it had to be marked copy.

I think it's fake too. He can sell it because there is no evidence that he made the coin, and he is not guaranteeing that it's real.

Quote: He can sell it because there is no evidence that he made the coin, and he is not guaranteeing that it's real. But when the buyer learns that it is fake he can return it. Even selling it "as is" doesn't protect him because even if he sells it in good faith he can't pass on a good title to it. Knowingly selling a fake is illegal, but even selling it unknowingly doesn't mean you can stick the buyer with it just because you didn't know. He is selling it as a near Mint 1885 V nickel. I think a Significantly Not As Described complaint to paypal/ebay would get the buyer a refund.

Hes definitely knowingly selling it as a fake if he had it up at a 3000 BIN a few days ago... Plus he just sounds really suspicious, lol. What a liar. Anyway, buyer protection is high on ebay, I'd actually say excessive and one can return anything if you know how to do it correctly.

I think it looks pretty good for a fake if it is one. All over I can see where the detail is shallow and flush with the field, if it weren't for that I would guess it were more likely a proof. Inside the ear, obviously the mouth and the number 1 is too thin among a number of other places, but it is kind of scary. I would pay $25 bucks or so to have this for educational purposes. It is gone too high now.

Reported. The 5 is also a giveaway that it is a fake.

Look, again, don't even consider a key date of this magnitude unless certified by one of the big three. I know, there are counterfeit slabs from China and the such, but I'd rather buy this coin from a reputable coin dealer than on the fLea.
