I don't collect Seated dimes and this is just MHO but the obverse eye appeal on the 1838-O is lacking. It's a scarce date and likely will go over $500 but I would pay that much for it.

The 1874 looks over-graded to me. It is attractive and may have gotten bumped up for eye appeal but honestly? NGC missed it by 5 points. It's a 53 even taking a light strike into account. This one might be a steal at $250 if you can it for that. I'd go $300 tops.

Here's a link to the 1874. I'd like to hear other member's opinions.

I agree, I would not call that AU-58. The reverse looks 58 but the obverse looks 50, so 53 is fair.

I inspected several With Arrows dimes at the Long Beach coin show, in grades from AU50 to MS61. They all had fairly weak detail and luster wasn't great. The PCGS and NGC assigned grades all seemed too generous. I expect it will be hard to find a superior example and if you do it will be expensive.

I have a question, for biding on teletrade or heritage...when you pay the extra fee's are we really saving anything?what you bid PLUS the auction percentage and shipping...auctions I have won, add up to much more than I though I was paying...I guess everyone else one...

Aladin, it all depends. You need to take into account the buyer's fee (15% on Heritage, I think), the shipping cost, and sales tax (where applicable) when deciding how much to bid. Set yourself a maximum total that you are willing to pay for each lot you want and back-calculate to determine how much to bid.

Unless my purchase total is $1500 or more (the California cut-off for the sales tax exemption) I must fork over an extra 9% for anything I buy at Heritage or Teletrade. Now that's a disincentive!

You can appreciate why a lot of collectors (me included!) buy coins on ebay. There is no buyer's fee and generally no sales tax, and sometimes there's even free shipping. ebay doesn't offer the prestige of a Heritage auction but it is possible to save some cash.

i just moved from a state I didn't have to pay taxes on the heritage/teletrade buys, now I live in one where I do - so the extra 9% will be a huge incentive not to buy. you can definitely find deals on those sites, I know I've seen a lot of those coins at coin shows being sold for hundreds more than they bought them for. Just bring an Iphone to the coin shows and look up past listings for slabbed coins and you can match up serial numbers on the slabs to the ones in the cases.
