I finally dug this bad boy out of my junk silver stash, to show all my friends on CCF.

I got this from circulation in 1987. Of course, I recognized the silver rim and "D" mintmark on the reverse.

Under a 16× loupe, I'd say it's a 1952-D.

My best guess back in 1987 was that someone gouged off the last two numerals of the date
in a lame attempt to keep the Quarter from being pulled from circulation.

After all these years, that's still my best guess!

Maybe it was a bad year for someone and he needed to erase it from everything they saw...

Theirs a saying in music "Its a sin to smash a good guitar" alas Pete Townsend of the Who. In the numismatic trade " Its a sin to vandalize a good Washington quarter".

The only thing worse than a vandalized Silver Quarter
is a melted Silver Quarter.

Good thing this ended up in DNA's "home for abused Silver coins".
