So I'm trying to help my friend determine a value for this love token. It was his mother's (not given to her, just part of her collection), and he's decided to sell it. I may buy it from him if I can, but if it's worth more than I think it is, I'll just help him sell it.

This is among the nicest Seated Liberty dimes I've come across ungraded in a collection, and it is definitely the most beautiful love token I've seen in a collection like this. I told him up front it could be worth anywhere between $50 (as a dime) and $200 (to the right love token collector), but I want to verify my opinion and if possible, narrow down that range a bit.

Moderators, if this belongs in the exonumia category, forgive me - I considered putting it there but as it's a classic coin and this section of the forum gets more traffic, I thought I'd start here! Please move the thread if I'm mistaken with my apologies.

I look at this from the perspective of it being strictly a novelty item due to the damage/re-structure. It is not a rare date either. It is though a really cool portrit on the reverse, most love tokens I have seen are simply initials so it may be worth a bit more to the right person. As a numismatic item It is worth $1.50-$2.00 for silver value. Not sure what you could get from the love token lover.

Most love tokens I have seen sell for around $10.

But, it's all about how elaborate the design is and the coin it is on. Dimes were the most popular love tokens, and therefore, the most abundant.

Your coin has a little more detail in the engraving than just initials or a name. But with the hole and being on a dime, personally, I would still put it in that $10 range. Just my opinion, of course.

Interesting... I figured the obverse grade (I reckon EF, scratched) would put it in the $20 - $30 range and the incredible carving on the back could make it closer to $100. I've never seen anything quite like it!

Oh well...

I've watched 'em go for $20 - $80 before on ebay, but nothing quite this nice. Shows ya what I know!

Don't discount your opinion over mine! You may well be right! Especially to the right collector. Wait for a few more opinions.

Especially, if you've seen lesser detail go for more!
Rest in Peace

It's a cool piece, but I agree with Scooby. $10 or so more or less. Usually carvings like that dont increase the value unless it's really intricate, like on a professionally carved hobo nickel. The hole in the top doesn't help either.

Honestly though, the fact that it belonged to his mother would give it MUCH more sentimental value than what he could sell it for. I would encourage him to keep it and treasure it as an heirloom.
