I have some 2x2'ed cents marked as proof. Before posting any pictures, I would like to first verify that proofs were minted in those years and mints. Some seem legitimate, some don't.

Can anyone point me to a good online reference? Thank you!

Excellent, thank you. Right there on the menu! DOH!

That got rid of 1 (56D) out of 3 suspects. I'm doubting the other 2 (66,71D) as they just seem like plain old unc. :)

The other 7 look like dealer sales, small holders (1 1/2 x 1 1/2) priced at 75 cents each except the 74S which was priced at $3 but slashed to 90 cents. I date this collection to the 80s (last coin in the collection is 1975).

Q: Do these "dealer" prices fit the time period?

They be pretty!

Edit: 1961, 1962, 1964, 1969S, 1970S, 1971S, 1974S

Sorry, still waiting for the marco camera. 3-7 days shipping BAH!

Thanks again!
Tim

Denver does not strike proofs except for the occasional commemorative and no proofs were issued 1965-67. Proofs since 1968 have been minted at San Francisco but business strike(for circulation) coins were also minted at San Francisco from 1968-1974, pay particular attention to those dates.

Thanks. I must have read the wrong line when looking up the 71D.

The referenced CCF link does have Proof Strikes listed for 65, 66, 67 but with an asterisk "The Proof mintage is for Special Mint Sets, which contained specially prepared coins that were not quite up to Proof standards."

1965 - 1,497,224,900 - 2,360,000 *
1966 - 2,188,147,783 - 2,261,583 *
1967 - 3,048,667,100 - 1,863,344 *

Not that it matters. I don't think the 66 is anything but UNC.

The 1974S tone is a nice bronze. Soooo nice. I will share...promise.

Thanks again. Love it here.

Tim

Here's the 74S. Love the color. Hate the PVC goo.

Camera practice...

The 74-S looks like an UNC to me. Not very mirror-like as most proofs are, but definitely a nice coin.

It's quite different from the UNC I have. I think the mirror is just covered over with PVC crap :( The others are more mirrored but still gooey.

That 1974-S cent is undoubtedly a proof. The details are all different between the proofs and the uncirculated cents. The rule on proofs would be the same for any year from 1960 through current - mirror background with frosted or semi-frosted foreground. They are easy to detect from the uncirculated coins.

Proofs were made in Philadelphia through 1964. 1965-1967 proofs are actually called "special mint set" coins but follow the same general rule as proofs. They do not have mintmarks. All proof cents from 1968 to date were minted in San Francisco. Business strike cents were also minted in San Francisco from 1968 through 1974. Basically ANY cent from 1975 to date with an 'S' mintmark is a proof.
