Also look at that coin; If that's MS67 quality, I'm dropping my PCGS club membership.

may be that its not MS-67 quality pictures. You can pretty much guarantee PCGS scrutinized that coin pretty well before giving it a top pop grade. They are notorious for trying to keep the top pop the top pop for quite awhile and if at all possible will give it a lower than top pop just to keep the pops low on the highest graded of the type so when they do go on sale they bring big money because so many people with the registry sets will be fighting over the ones that comes to the market at any given time

Quote:
Only ones sold at auctions were MS66s and they sold for $161. True, only 9 coins in a field should yield a good premium over the next lower grade, but $5,000 is a little much.

Check out numismedia price guide for 1878 7TF Morgans. In MS-64 it lists for $238.00, for MS-65 its $1,160.00 and for MS-66 its $6,190.00 and for MS-67 a whopping $21,880.00 and there are some 67's out there. One grade can definitely make a huge difference in price

Sorry bryan1315 but you'll never convince me that a 35 year old clad coin, even in principal, will ever equate to an 1887 7TF Morgan.
Oranges and apples, in my opinion and "ne'er the twain shall meet." OMG, am I becoming a coin elitist...quick someone get the 2x4...
Even the eye appeal of that Ike makes me wince.

I agree, the coin in hand is likely to be much different.

Yes, but there are people who like those type of coins, no matter how crazy that appears to be. Remember that all people have different tastes in coins.

No I wasn't trying to compare the two coins just show that one grade difference can make a huge difference in price because of the limited numbers available in those grades. The 1880-S Morgan is a great example, only two years after the 1878 example but yet a MS-67 is valued way under $1000.00 and almost $4000.00 less than the 1976 IKE Type2 in MS-67 because there are so many of the 1880-S in very high grades

Some very interesting comments.
There are some Ike collectors that are into the registry thing
I for one am not one. And a coin like this one would definitely
help ones registry ranking. Being that there are more Ike registry
sets than both Morgan's and Peace dollars. (PCGS Registry Sets)
Plus the fact that finding any Ike above MS66
is just a very cool and hard thing to begin with.
There are other Ike collectors that just recognize that
Eisenhower dollars are just in a unique place in numismatic history
right now.
It is an almost 40 year old coin that comes in both Cuni-Clad
and Silver specimens. Only minted for 8 years, Has an incredible
number of Major varieties for such a short production run.
Is the last large Silver dollar made for general circulation.
Due to Minting Production,Storage and Distribution Methods
of the, time finding them in any kind of high grade
is very very difficult.
I am not trying to convince anybody about Eisenhower's to
collect them or how great the are or anything like that.
As a matter of fact "I like Ike" But I love Walker halves
Also the more Ike collectors there are the more competition
for the high grade ones.
Those that are seriously into Eisenhower's understand
these things like second nature, how far they have come
in the last 10 years and that it is only in the last
few years that ANY kind of serious study of the series
has taken place.
Just some facts for such high prices for what some
consider an ordinary modern coin.
Below is a list of registry sets on PCGS
because I did not want to start a flame war on the comment
comparing Ike's to Morgans and Peace
registry sets above. Been through this debate already.

This is not scientific, but I just think Ikes are really cool. If you spend an Ike, someone's face likely will light up. Or at least you will get a reaction of some sort. Yes, a 1969-S DDO penny is exciting to a collector, but any old Ike has a much bigger "wow" factor to the average person.

Almost all of the marks you can see are slab scratches, not bag marks on the coin itself.
