Very nice! I'm still trying to get the hang of grading, so I won't comment on that. But, I would have easily dropped $10 on that regardless! Nice score!

You got that for 10 bucks? Wow, I would say you paid around 1/4 to 1/5 th the price it would have fetched on ebay. Heck yes you did great! I hope the seller follows through and it is as pictured. Nice!

Thanks guys. I was hoping it wasn't just me who thought it was a good deal. If I was to sell it, what could I get on the bay?

Thats a fantastic buy. I'd call it XF. CDN if I recall is $140 although this coin may have some micro- porosity in hand. Let us know! Anyway you cut it, smokin pickup!

When one sell anything on fee-pay, you are lucky to get much of anything lately. I have purchased some amazing bargains because there are very few bidders. Only the high end stuff fetches top dollar. Numismeadia FMV guide shows a G-4 @ $26 so you could say you done good. Here is one selling right now and the high bid is $19.50 and has over 5 hrs left and believe me, it is a lot worse looking. here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/1857-FLYING-EAG...em4cf1d0c74e

Looks like nearly EF detail but the surfaces don't look so good. I'd say this coin has light corrosion and has been cleaned. It's easily worth more than $10 so you still got a good deal.
Tumbleweed: the blackish color, reverse porosity, and the eroded look to the denticles (particularly along the lower right reverse rim) all suggest light corrosion to me. Perhaps the coin was a well-preserved metal detector find that suffered environmental damage. The light-colored areas on some high points look like the result of a cleaning attempt that removed some of the oxidized layer.
I could be wrong but I see this as a "problem" coin worth less than an original EF example.

Please explain. I see light porous on the reverse, but no cleaning or corrosion.

I can't put my finger on why, but the piece looks "funky" to me. Something about the rims and denticals just doesn't seem right. Especially the finning from 10:00 to 12:00 on the reverse.
