Hey, I need some advice on this one--I got this coin in 2001 knowing it was cleaned at some point. I bought it because I liked the amount of details I got at a cheap price ($150) and I liked that the coin is starting to retone, especially on the obverse. I bought it hoping that the whole coin will retone in time. I have two questions now:

1. What is a good way to store this coin to promote natural toning?

2. It appears to have been whizzed--how would I go about measuring the value of this early Capped Bust half dollar?

Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

to the forum. You can sit in in a window seal for awhile to inhibit toning. I can't really see the whizzing and its really hard to see whizzing in pictures if the whizzing was done lightly. If you are referring to the area around the stars on the left side I think that is where the metal was stretched when struck. As far as value I am not a capped bust collector but we have some collectors here that would be able help you more in that area

Welcome to the community.

I see no whizzing on this coin, but it does have some interesting things going on with it. There is no milling visible which is a sign of a worn die, along with the edge lettering very light and worn another sign of a worn edge lettering die. The bust and eagle are nicely struck and would grade at VF-35. If it wasn't for the worn edge. I also see some flattering of the edge which suggest are die variation of O-106a. CBH are classified by die variation and given an Overton number and this appears to me to be O-106a. They are also assigned a rarity code from R.1 to R.8, where R.1 is common and R.8 is unique. Yours is R.3 which make it scarce. $150 for this coin was a nice price. I would say today's value is @175-$200 depending if a buyer needs this variety.

Thanks for your warm welcome and for the help, Bryan1315 and echizento. I appreciate your time and input. The reverse's surfaces have a very odd texture, that did not come out so much in the photograph. When I got the coin, the description was "cleaned by a jeweler's cloth." I am not entirely sure what all the implications of that are. Does anyone know? I still really like this coin, especially as it regains toning. I also really appreciate the insight into the die variation and the rarity.

Just for curiosity (I am not looking to sell this now), what might be a suitable net grade, even given some of the weakness on the edges and unnatural surfaces? Thanks again for your time.

I would give it an overall grade of VF-30.

The details look AU50 but with the problems noted, a VF30 grade should provide you with a reasonable value.

Nice avatar!

I love the detail (on the obverse particularly) and your photography makes the whole coin look 3D! Very nice!

The reverse obviously has wear along the edges and a soft strike (or maybe a Grease Filled Die?) on the 50C but strong along the normal wear places like the eagle's wings. Again very nice!

This is a LDS (Late Die Strike/State) coin evident by the "stretchy" stars on the obverse and the almost total lack of dentils. It almost looks like the center of the coin is a different one than the outer rims! (Lots of detail in the middle and little on the edges.)

Overall a VF-35. Very sweet!

and

to the CCF!

Keep posting your cool coins! We love 'em!

bherring1964: I should say the same about your avatar! The Coronet design on the eagle, half eagle, and quarter eagle is so beautiful. I can't say I feel the same way about the double eagle though--thanks for your appraisal!

Moe145: Thanks for the compliment--I wish my photography would show the unnatural qualities of the reverse surface more--but oh well. I definitely see what you mean by saying that the center of the coin looks like a totally different coin than the rims. That's part of why I got this coin, knowing that is not totally problem-free. I like the coin's character, if that makes sense. I will surely look out for your thread. I have four CBH's of varying quality (I have an awful cleaned, nicked, and scratched 1826 one) I will be happy to contribute, but mostly, I am interested in seeing what everyone else has!
