Just came across the forum yesterday while trying to evaluate some coins that need to be sold.

Opinions on this coin? What do you use to distinguish between gradings on these rough, low grade Lincolns?

Here's an online grading guide:

This piece would likely grade around G04 and be worth roughly $175.

These key dates are widely counterfeited but in the condition your coin is in, that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks

Definitely not concerned about it being counterfeit. It came from a great aunt who passed in the mid 2000s who happened to be a hoarder and quite possibly the cheapest person I've ever met. I doubt she would've paid enough for it to even make the coin worth counterfeiting. Also comes straight out of an old Whitman with just a few missing dates/mints, sadly one being the 1909S vdb.

The obverse is definitely stronger on this coin, rating about a VG-8 IMO. The weak, AG-3-ish reverse brings the overall grade down to G-4 or so. On the plus side, the surfaces look original with no apparent cleaning or damage.

I agree with a G4 grade. Tough coin.

One of my favorite coins, the 14d lincoln.
G4 for sure. I'd say more of the 14d's are g4 or lower than vg8 and higher
