Any better way? I hack it off the top part, then use a knife pry it open; It's kind of barbarian. Some of you must have a better way. I'd appreciate if you share.

I am listening to Linda Ronstand's Blue Bayou and then I open your thread, it really made me smile. You are absolutely right, do not change anything, that is the way to go, slabs are unnatural for coins. Unfortunately they are essential for investments, the old conundrum... A better way? I think this one is perfect...

I can just hear the screams of that poor half, just before you did that dastardly deed: 'PLEASE don't hit me!'

Send it through usps marked non-machinable. Happened to me just today. I'm wondering what sort of refund I should offer. Seems however it's marked, they get cracked, if not smashed.

some people use hedge cutters or whatever to take off the top, it's much more accurate and minimizes damage to the coin

Dremel best $35 I've ever spent. Use the little cutter zip off the top and run right down the sides. Then after you got it open you can give it a quick whiz or two. Touch up a line or two. LOL I SWEAR I've NEVER TOUCHED A COIN WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN A FINGER AND PALM. This was just for funny. Funny Ha Ha. NOt Funny How. LOL

If you use a bolt cutter and snip the very edge of the slab right at the center point of the coin, the slab will crack all the way across and you can open it like it's a hinge.
This particular cut location applies to PCGS slabs only.

Another one freed from its tomb! I agree with amassey08873, use a Dremel or other brand rotary tool (mine happens to be a Craftsman).

Actually, If you place the top portion of the slab ( the part with the label only ) in a vise, about half way down the label, lock it in and slowly bend the bottom over with your hand, and wearing a glove, they crack open and slide the coin out..........I was also glad to free those coins from the prison they were in!!

I use my bench grinder and grind the slab all the way around until I get past the seal and just lift it open.
