Hello you all I am starting a small colelction of Russian coins from the late 1800's, early 1900's. I recently got these right here, a 1 rouble from 1987, a 50 kopeks from 1896 and a 20 kopeks from 1916. What do you all think? The 1 rouble has markings on the side( in Russian) along with 2 stars. The 50 kopeks has the marks too, it has 1 star on it. And the 20 kopeks has a stripped rim on it. I do not know if this info is usefull but I will trow it out there anyways. I will get the weight soon. Also I was looking for some advice from russian coin experts. I have been reading a lot about fake russian coins flooding the market. What should I be in the look for before I buy. I fthey have the letters on the side are they safe to buy? and what abou the rim? Thanks guys, great day! Manuel C.

These are the most common Russian empire coins. But they are in a pretty nice shape.Hope you don't spend more than 30$ for them.

As long as the weight of the coin is right, you should be alright. If it doesn't look common and the price seems cheap, chances are you are getting some fantasy nonsense. Don't fall over titles such as novodels, restrike etc. Genuine novodel or restrike are still worth good money if they are really struck officially. It does not mean copy coins. You should get a catalog - Uzdenikov 2nd edition is really good for beginners and it's not that expensive. The pictures that ribis took are from this book. I reckon you should be able to get a copy within 40USD including shipping. Please get the catalog before buying any more coins - trust me, it's one of the best investment you can ever make out of that 600+ page book when it comes down to Russian numismatics. You can also look at my Russian coin collection to have a rough idea. Omnicoin.com: http://www.omnicoin.com/collection/gxseries I have also included some counterfeits there as a good reminder of how badly I got stung.

I hit a minor jackpot the other day and picked up a problem-free VF 1812 rouble for $75. Also got an An XI Paris mint Napoleon 5F for $20 and a plated copper counterfeit 1812A demi franc for $4. I love finding dealers with neglected stocks of nice foreign coins but there aren't that many around. WAY more fun the ebay.
